What Is the Medifast Diet?
The Medifast Diet is a low calorie diet that has been recommended by more that 15,000 physicians for more than 20 years. Using a high-protein food supplement to help you lose weight, the Medifast Diet can help you lose weight faster and more easily than ever before, and is ideal for individuals who are:
-
overwhelmed by the amount of weight they need to lose
-
stuck and can’t seem to lose weight on other plans
-
struggling to lose weight due to medical problems or limited mobility
Even if you’ve tried other plans and fallen short of your goals, you can lose the weight with Medifast; and you can do it while still enjoying delicious foods like chili, shakes, minestrone, and chocolate divine bars.
How Does It Work?
The Medifast Diet takes advantage of a process in the body known as ketosis. By combining balanced nutrition and low-calorie level, Medifast products cause fat stores to release free fatty acids. These fatty acids are in turn converted in the liver into an energy source called ketones. It is this mild state of ketosis that helps you achieve rapid weight loss while at the same time preserving muscle tissue. In short, ketosis helps eliminate physical hunger while providing sufficient levels of energy and rapid weight loss.
Just How “Low Calorie” Is It?
We mentioned that the Medifast Diet is low-calorie, but this is a claim that many diets make. Often too few calories can mean too little energy. So how is Medifast different? The Medifast Diet is based upon the principle of VLCD, or Very Low Calorie Diet. As the name implies, the VLCD—at 500 to 800 calories per day—provides far fewer calories than you may be used to taking in. But Medifast products are very carefully formulated to assure adequate levels of protein while restricting carbohydrates. This increased proportion of protein causes the body to maintain a very mild level of ketosis. When combined with low calorie intake, this physical state of ketosis allows rapid weight loss while preserving muscle tissue. As you can see, there’s more to it than simply reducing calories; and the delicate balance of protein, carbohydrates, and calories with which Medifast products are made sets this diet apart.
