Colic - Introduction

While all babies cry, colic produces crying way out of proportion for babies between 3 weeks and 6 months of age. With colic, the crying infant is not easily consoled and can last up to 12 or 14 hours a day. The crying is also much more frequent than expected occurring more than 3 times a week. Typically the baby will draw up their legs and pass gas which might help relieve their symptoms.

Colic is fairly common occurring in about 10% to 30% of all babies. What you will NOT find in simple colic is vomiting, diarrhea, fever or blood in the stool. When you do find crying associated with any of these symptoms that is the time to call your physician.

Take comfort in the fact that this will not last forever. In just a matter of weeks your baby will sleep better and be much happier.
