Preparing for your BIA test

To maximize the accuracy of the BIA reading, please observe the following preparations.

  • Arrive to the office on an empty stomach with no food or beverages other than water for 8 hours or more. If this is not possible, then please allow at least 4 hours, however the results may not be as accurate. NO ALCOHOL for at least 8 hours.
  • Empty your bladder immediately before the test.
  • No exercise for at least 8 hours.
  • For better reliability between tests try to perform each test at approximately the same time of day.
  • Ladies – attempt to perform the test during the same time of your menstrual cycle and not during your cycle.
  • If you use medications that affect water balance – steroids, growth hormone, diuretics – the every measurement should be taken at the same time after medication use.
  • Pacemakers/defibrillators – no known interference has been reported. It is safe to test.

The technician will do the following.

  • Before each test your height will be measured to the nearing 0.5 cm.
  • Before each test your weight will be measured to the nearest 0.1 kg.
  • Check and make sure that your skin temperature is the same as the room temperature. Hot or cold skin affects the results.
  • Make sure there are no skin lesions present. If so, a different site will be chosen.
  • The skin will be cleaned with alcohol prior to testing.
  • The test is on the right side of the body. If for some reason the left is used, amputation, muscle atrophy, etc., then it will always be on the left.
  • The electrodes will be placed a minimum of 5 cm apart.
  • Arms separated from trunk by about 30 degrees and legs separated by about 45 degrees. If this is not possible then a towel will be placed between the arm and body or between the legs.
  • You will lye flat for 5-10 minutes before the study is performed.
  • You will avoid contact with metal and the room will free of any strong electrical or magnetic fields.
  • If you have a prosthesis or implant (metal) then the opposite side of the body will be measured
